Little Rome
As a nation that is home to several religions that co-exist together peacefully, in Sri Lanka it is not unusual at all to see religious structure from various faiths located in close vicinity to each other. But in the town of Negombo, that has earned the nickname “Little Rome” this trend is broken.
Visitors to this coastal town situated on the western side of the country will find that the Christian faith is heavily represented with an array of different religious structures. The city is literally full of Churches, a fact that has to be seen to be believed. At just about every turn travellers will encounter a Church or at the very least a statue of Jesus Christ. This has made the use of a Church as a landmark to guide people in the town somewhat unpractical. One of the most prominent churches is St. Mary’s which features grand and impressive architecture, making it noteworthy site to visit.
These structures also represent the colonial past of Sri Lanka as many of these Churches and Christianity itself was introduced in to the country by both the Dutch and the Portuguese.Despite the high number of Churches and Christian structures there are still some ancient temples of other faiths to be found here as well, that illustrate that Sri Lanka’s multi-ethnicity is ever present.
Being a hotel near Little Rome or Negombo, Jetwing Blue Oceanic allows visitors the chance to discover an area that is both representative of religion and colonial history in Sri Lanka which are two key aspects of the country.
