Old Dutch Fort Gate
The coastal town of Negombo is synonymous with many things, amazing views of the lagoon and the sea behind it, a wide variety of sumptuous seafood and finally its colonial heritage. The town of Negombo was both a Portugese and Dutch colony. There are many throwbacks that represent this era of the towns history, ranging from old world houses and bungalows to churches. However a significant landmark that remains of this time is the Old Dutch Fort Gate.

The Old Dutch Fort Gate was originally part of the Dutch Fort built in 1644 when the Dutch took control of the island. The structure was built on the remnants of the old Portugese Fort. It was decided upon its commencement of construction that the Fort would standout from others and have a pentagonal shape as opposed to the generic rectangular shapes of the day. The location of the Dutch Fort was continually washed by the incoming waves and tides to produce the peninsula that is now present with a calm and picturesque lagoon.

The Dutch Fort received modifications and improvements a few years later via the extension of the walls, new watch towers and a new palisade.

The Old Dutch Fort Gate is one of the significant attractions in Negombo, offering a glimpse into colonial rule and its unique architecture and style. The peninsula upon which the gate is located offers unhindered all encompassing views of the ocean and the lagoon behind it. The Jetwing Blue Oceanic is the ideal beach retreat with luxurious accommodation and a wide array of amenities and services.
