Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens
Situated 6km to the South of Kandy, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, is the foremost of its kind in Sri Lanka in both size and splendor. The historical park was created in the 18th century by the Kandyan King for the enjoyment of the aristocracy. However, the site dates back to the 14th century when a royal abode was constructed amidst its enchanting natural beauty. In 1821 it was declared a botanical garden by the British governor, Edward Barnes and continues to provide both pleasure and education while carrying out a yeoman service in biodiversity conservation and sustainability to date.

An aura of tranquil romance pervades the lush magnificence of the gardens’ 150 acres of flora, making a visit to the premises an ideal retreat from the strain of the city. The majestic Royal Palm Avenue leads from the entrance to the Mahaweli River which borders the park on the north. The Great Lawn which is situated to the west of the avenue is home to a magnificent Javan Fig which creates a natural pavilion of roots and branches. A restaurant is situated in its vicinity enabling visitors to have a memorable picnic while enjoying nature’s bounty at its finest. Among its many plants the park also features an orchid house, a spice garden and a Japanese garden while a southern area is adorned by a picturesque lake filled with water lilies.

In addition to its range of local and foreign plants, Peradeniya Gardens is home to a considerable variety of fauna, including many endemic species making it one of the most magnetic attractions in Kandy. Visitors to the Gardens will undoubtedly enjoy lodging at the Jetwing Hunas Falls located in front of the magnificent Hunas Falls crowning a hill, coupling serene beauty with luxurious and warm hospitality.
