Handicraft in Galle
The seaport town of Galle situated on the southern coast of Sri Lanka is one of the oldest towns in Sri Lanka. With a vibrant history that has been influenced by Portugese, Dutch and British rule, the town has a unique identity which seems to blend each of these aspects seamlessly with traditional style and culture. Galle is also home to a thriving handicrafts industry where century’s old technique is used to create unique objects that symbolise this rich and diverse history.

As with many cities around the world, Galle has its own unique blend of handicrafts (once highly sought after by Royalty) that are indigenous to the region. Ebony Work is predominant in the region and is created using the hard kernel of black wood. Using a mallet and chisel craftsman whose trade they learnt from their ancestors can carve fascinating and ornate pieces such as figurines and tribal designs. Lace, which was introduced by the Portugese has been native to Galle ever since and is a popular livelihood in the city. As the lace is rolled, weavers prick the intricate designs into the lace. Main types of lace produced are either pillow or crochet lace.

Costume jewellery though not indigenous to the region is also widely made in Galle simple jewellery where colourful stones are bonded to simple yet stylish metal chains is the commonest form available. Kandyan based jewellery is far more intricate and craftsmen have to be very skilled. Using a technique known as filigree where silver threads and converted to minute grain that are then individually placed on the surface of the jewellery.
