Sustainability By The Negombo Lagoon
Resting upon the edge of one of the western province’s most prominent water bodies, our commitment to a number of sustainable initiatives is both natural and complementary. With a focus on energy, environment, and efficiency, Jetwing Lagoon has not only invested in dedicated infrastructure, but also holds the honour of a few firsts, which reflect our celebrated standing as a true believer in responsible tourism.

Climate Action
The hotel also features a 270kW grid-tied, roof mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system, that contributes approximately 30% of our electricity requirement.
Jetwing Lagoon was the first commercial institute in Sri Lanka to feature 100% LED lighting. LED bulbs are used across the property, including the garden and swimming pool, as they are more energy efficient than both CFL and incandescent bulbs.
Jetwing Lagoon also holds the honour of establishing the first vapor absorption chiller (VAC) in a Sri Lankan hotel. Sustainably operated via steam generated from the onsite biomass boiler, the VAC provides air-conditioning for the entire property with a capacity of 100TR. It is also worth mentioning that the VAC consumes less than 10% of electricity, which would be consumed by a conventional chiller of equal capacity. The biomass boiler is fueled by sustainably harvested cinnamon wood, and operates 24 hours a day to produce up to 1500 kilograms of steam per hour – most of which is used to operate the VAC, as well as for hot water generation during the night.
The central hot water system of the hotel is operated completely on renewable energy. With 50 flat plate collector-type solar panels, the system is able to provide all the hot water required for hotel operations between 9 AM and 4 PM, while steam from the biomass boiler generates hot water during the night.

Resource Efficiency
The onsite effluent treatment plant at Jetwing Lagoon allows us to treat 100% of wastewater generated through hotel operations. Ensuring that all produce is put to sustainable use, treated water from the plant is used for garden irrigation and the operation of our cooling towers. Storm water collected from the entire property is also diverted to a collection pond, which aids in groundwater recharge.
In addition, while an enhanced composter at Jetwing Lagoon processes all food waste from our kitchens and restaurants within a rapid digestion process of 21 days; garden sweepings and other tree clippings from the hotel gardens are composted using a traditional above-ground compost pile. Compost produced from both processes is then used as a nutrient-rich soil enhancer in our hotel garden.

Heritage Stewardship
Designed by renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, Jetwing Lagoon holds the prestige of being Bawa’s first purpose-built resort. Jetwing Lagoon is an iconic symbol of tropical modernism, a style of architecture that combines modernist principles with tropical vernacular traditions. Even through the refurbishments we have strived to maintain Bawa’s original design concepts.

Thriving Community
Youth from nearby communities are recruited through the Jetwing Youth Development Programme (JYDP), which offers free training in tourism, hospitality, language, and interpersonal skills. This equips them for careers within the industry. After the training, participants receive on-the-job training and are then given the opportunity to join our family, though there is no obligation to do so.

Empowered Family
As an equal opportunity employer, we ensure all associates have equal growth opportunities with promotions based solely on merit. We celebrate diversity and are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive workplace.
Employee health and safety is of the utmost importance to us. We routinely inspect our spaces, maintain essential safety equipment, and provide thorough training so that all associates are well-prepared in case of an emergency.

Impact Sourcing
Minimising both plastic waste and the carbon footprint from transportation, Jetwing Lagoon uses glass water bottles that are filled at the glass water bottling plant in operation at the nearby Jetwing Blue.
Separated from the expansive lawn at Jetwing Lagoon, the establishment of an organic garden enables us to make optimal use of our greenery by growing local fruits and herbs whenever possible. This very produce is then later used in our hotel kitchens, where it contributes toward the creation of mouthwatering meals that are served to you.
At Jetwing Hotels, we take pride in celebrating our local cuisine. We were the first family of hotels in Sri Lanka to exclusively use local fruits, vegetables, and seafood in our culinary offerings. By focusing on local sourcing, we’ve built strong partnerships throughout our supply chain, with many of our suppliers located within the same district.

At Jetwing Hotels, we’re committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and fostering positive social impacts. We welcome your feedback on our sustainability efforts, including suggestions for how we improve. Please share your thoughts and ideas with us at sustainability@jetwinghotels.com
