Dutch Reformed Church
The coastal town of Galle is ideally located on the southern coast and was once a thriving port town that did trade as far as Egypt. The town has been colonised by many sea faring races over the times from the Portugese, Dutch and finally the British. Each race left their distinct mark on the city. One of these is the Dutch Reformed Church.

The Dutch Reformed Church was setup by the Dutch East India Trading Company in 1642. The church was recently restored by the Dutch government and made into a historical attraction. The unique architecture and high ceilings make it stand out among more modern and minimalist buildings in the surrounding area. A trip through the old cemetery reveals a unique insight into Dutch colonial life including admiring the unique writing and carvings on the tombstones. There are many interesting stories surrounding the church such as there were once secret underground tunnels that ran to the governor’s house and key locations in the city.

Christianity was introduced to the Netherlands between 700 and 750 AD. During the time of the renaissance, the teachings of French Theologian Jean Calvin had significant influence on Christianity in the Netherlands. His teachings promoted a ‘love of gain’ hence the main reason for their commercial expansion. This led to the formation of the United Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the True Dutch Reformed Church. On the ships of the VOC several personally chosen religious clerics were present to perform religious rites onboard.

Upon the charter of 1602 which promoted the spread of Netherlands based Christianity, it was these sea faring religious disciples that were charged with spreading their unique gospel in the east. The Dutch Reformed Church is an important Galle attraction offering a glimpse of Dutch influence in the east. Jetwing Lighthouse is an architectural wonder incorporating Dutch styling tones, offering a variety of luxurious accommodation, along with modern amenities and facilities.
