The sea town of Galle was once a thriving seaport, it was considered a hub for international trade throughout Asia. Over the many long years the port has changed hands under colonial rule. The first foreign settlers were the Portugese, then the Dutch who created the much needed yet beautiful Fort and then finally the British.
Due to its days as a port town many wealthy industrialists and famous companies built lavish and stylish houses that blended European style with Tropical Flair. Walking along the narrow streets of the Fort one may come across many houses built by the Dutch and British during their rule. Dutch houses compared to their rival colonials have ornate styling and feel more at home in a European village. Admire the vintage double hinged doors or the smooth cement floors that provide a cool atmosphere to these airy houses. Some of the key Dutch buildings of their time are the Fort Printers building and the Old Inn and their exteriors are still as grand as if they were built yesterday. Another residence of note is the grand and imposing “Dutch Commandeurs” residence.
The British to left their unique mark on the town in the form of many regal British style mansions that combined airy promenades and wide gardens with European design. A famous residence to be found is the Closenburg. This graciously styled spacious bungalow mansion was built for the British shipping company P&O. The unique trussels on its roof represent a sun burst in homage to the company’s sun logo. There are many historic mansions dotted around the city of Galle. The residences offer a glimpse into colonial life for foreign settlers on the island and how European traditions and designs blend into a tropical environment. The Jetwing Lighthouse is a Dutch influenced modern and luxurious hotel with modern amenities and services.
