Ambalangoda is renowned as the country’s foremost producer of wooden masks. The traditional masks which comprise 120 different varieties play a large role in the cultural heritage of the southern part of the island. Used by performers in dance forms such as the “Kolam” which were performed to ward of illness, evil spirits, malevolence etc in the past, the masks are now principally produced for decorative purposes and as souvenirs, creating a thriving cottage industry in the region. However, the rarity of Kolam performances in modern times has threatened a number of masks with oblivion.

Situated to the north of the city centre, The Ariyapala and Sons Mask Museum and Ariyapala Traditional Masks are owned by the sons of the late Ariyapala Wijesurya who is recognized as the region’s master mask carver greatly responsible for the fame of Ambalangoda masks.
