National Maritime Museum
The coastal town of Galle in the south of Sri Lanka has always had a vibrant and charismatic association with the sea. Originally it was a very popular trading port and many historians believe it to be biblical Tarshish where King Solomon sent his ship to acquire precious gemstones, spices and scented woods.

To celebrate and remember this special association the city of Galle has with the sea, the National Maritime Museum was setup in 1992. The museum is located in the former Dutch warehouse building which is an artefact in itself. The buildings unique architecture and construction is also to be noted when visiting the museum.

The museum has a wide variety of items on display spanning various categories from sea life to maritime history. Exhibits to be noted are the wheel of the first warship of the Navy, gifted to the then infant navy from the British who had left Sri Lanka just a few years back. Other maritime exhibits include an Oruva or outrigger canoe widely used by fishermen to this day. The vessel itself has not changed since its invention by Polynesians. In addition there is a now extinct Yatra- Doni, a sail type vessel that was last used in the 1930s by brave, intrepid sailors for trade with India and the Maldives.

The museum also has on display a comprehensive presentation on traditional fishing life displaying the variety of equipment used, their local lore and superstitions and finally wrapped up by displaying some of the key wildlife found in the oceans. Many varieties of coral are present including anatomies and skeletons of popular aquatic species.
