Sri Lanka, with its tropical climate and exotic landscape, has been described as a paradise for bird watchers. The varied habitats in the country which include lowland rain forests, montane forests and plains, wetlands and monsoon forests are home to 492 recorded species of birds. Of this large number of species, 272 are migratory from India, Siberia, Scandinavia and Western Europe, and 26 are known to be endemic to Sri Lanka. About 150 of the species are common to the Dry Zone, and can be seen in the area around Sigiriya. Jetwing Vil Uyana is located in Rangirigama, an area which has become well known as a haven for birders, with over 120 recorded species.
The bird watching tour led by the resident naturalist will take you outside the hotel premises on a trail that goes past paddy fields through lush vegetation to the Rangirigama Lake where it is possible to see about 40 different species of birds. Considered a winter retreat for a large number of birds from northern regions, the number of bird species rises to over 50 from November to April making it the ideal spot for bird watching in Sri Lanka. Common Kingfishers, Peacocks, Egrets, Fish Eagles, Brahminy Kites, Purple Coots and Jacanas are easily spotted, and if you are lucky you might see the rarer sights of Fish Owls, Hornbills, Black Bitterns and Yellow Bitterns and even the endemic Green Pigeon. Sharing the habitat with the birds are reptiles like the marsh crocodile, water monitor and land monitor. The Grey Langur and Toque Macaque which are endemic to Sri Lanka and seen in abundance in the Dry Zone, are a common sight on the bird trail.
