The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 CE to reunite the country once more under a local leader.

Bicycle Trail From Jetwing Vil Uyana

In the vicinity of Jetwing Vil Uyana, there are three ancient man made water bodies and a meditation center. These interesting places are located along our designed bicycle trail. The trail runs through a series of diversified habitats. The tour will also give a person an insight to the rural life of Sri Lanka and a good opportunity to see the water and the forest bird life of the area.

Inamaluwa Tank can be reached, cycling along the approach road from Jetwing Vil Uyana to Inamaluwa Junction, about 5km away. The major vegetation found in the Inamaluwa Tank is the Sacred Lotus with large white flowers and broad round leaf blades offering an excellent habitat for the ‘Lilly trotters’, the “Jacanas, Coots and white Breasted Water Hens. Among other water birds found here are “Herons, Egrets and Cormorants. It is also a good place to see the “White Bellied and Grey Headed Fish Eagles”. These could be observed from the tank bund itself. A panoramic view of the Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve can be seen in the northern direction.

Etawara-hena tank is also a good place to see birds. It is devoid of Water lilies but has a large number of Kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna) trees offering an excellent habitat for roosting water birds. The tank also offers beautiful scenery of the area. A Buddhist Monastery Enderagala Wana Sena Suna Aranya can be seen to your left which could be visited on your way back to the hotel. From the Etawara-Hena Tank you could enter the bund of Randeniya Tank, another interesting place to see water birds, including the four species of King Fishers (“Common king Fisher, Pied King Fisher, White throated king Fisher, Stroke billed King fisher”) found in the area.

At this point, it will be good to take a break to quench your thirst with a fruit drink that is provided by Jetwing Vil Uyana. Another distance of about a kilometer will take you to the “Enderagala Wana Sena Suna Aranya” which is a Meditation center for Buddhist Monks. A place one has got to respect with silence without disturbing the meditating Buddhist Monks and other clergy. Enjoy the serene atmosphere, before cycling back to the Jetwing Vil Uyana a distance of about another 05 km, thus completing your circuit.
