Iron Wood Forest
Being endemic to Sri Lanka, The Iron Wood Tree has always played an important part in the local medicinal practices in Sri Lanka. This unique type of tree features certain medicinal properties that are used in the practice of Ayurveda that is still present today in the country. It is for this reason that the tree has some significance in the country and is the national tree of Sri Lanka.

Iron Wood Forest is as its name suggests a forest that is heavily dominated by this unique type of tree. It was created by King Dappula in 8th century AD and spans over 200 acres. Though unknown to most people there are actually types of Iron Wood tree, but most locals refer to both by a single name ‘Na- Gaha” which means Na Tree.

The reason for the trees importance is that just about every part of it can be used for Ayurvedic medicinal purposes starting from the root, going up the trunk and ending up with the leaves and flowers. Some of these are then applied directly for medicinal uses whilst some are combined with other ingredients. The forest while known as Iron Wood forest is dominated by this type of tree, but it isn’t the only type that can be found here. Various different types of trees help complement the forest in addition to several streams.

Another important attraction that is located here is the Rose Quartz Mountain. This geologically important rock formation is believed to be over 500 million years old and presents rose, white and violet colour quartz deposits.
With its strong cultural, historical and geological important aspects, Iron Wood Forest is one of those attractions in Sigiriya that should not be omitted on your travels. Guests of Jetwing Vil Uyana will have no trouble accessing this destination due to the hotel’s ideal location in Sigiriya.
