Sigiriya Lion Rock and Fresco Paintings
One of the most iconic destinations in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya which is also known as the Lion Rock is a momentous sight. This natural rock formation that is virtually impossible to miss from a distance is not only a major tourist attraction but is also a site replete with history.

During its heyday, the entrance of the palace was through the massive head of the lion figure though sadly today only a paw remains. From the sheer size of the paw, visitors can appreciate how truly gargantuan the lion’s head would have once been. Ascending the rock is a challenging experience, and certain sections may prove challenging for people who are afraid of heights. Along the way there are numerous side attractions to be seen.

The King’s Throne is made of pure stone, and faces outwards towards the exit of the palace. Standing in front of the throne it is not hard to imagine the sense of power that must have been bestowed on King Kasyapa during his reign. At one point of the journey, a small section of the trip goes in to a small enclosed area that houses what are known as the Sigiriya Frescoes. These depict partially naked maidens that became a part of the palace created during Kasaypa’s rule. Though writings inscribed on the nearby ‘mirror wall’ suggest that there were once 100 of these, today only 18 remain.

Once at the top, the first thing visitors will be privy to is the simply stunning view of the surrounding area that shows Sri Lanka’s natural heritage. Additionally there are also various tanks and the bathing pool. Jetwing Vil Uyana, a hotel near Sigiriya Lion Rock presents visitors convenient access to this historically and monumentally significant destination.
