Worlds End
The renowned World’s End is located in the Horton Plains National Park and is reached by a 5km walk through the highest plains in Sri Lanka which lie at an elevation of over 2000 meters. The journey affords the visitor with a mesmerizing sight of virgin cloudforest and diversity of mountainous flora not to be seen in any other part of the island.
World’s End is the sheerest escarpment in the hill country with a dramatically vertical fall of 884 meters providing a panoramic view of the south. In excellent weather conditions a visitor is able to see right up to the Indian Ocean. The site also offers a magnificent view of Kirigalpotta and Thotupolakanda, Sri Lanka’s 2nd and 3rd highest mountains. Visibility is at its best in the period between November and February. Towards noon, the view from the precipice is obscured by the mist creating the impression of being truly at the end of the world, perched on the brink of a vast and mysterious emptiness. Small World’s End located about 250m before its more illustrious counterpart offers a more modest viewpoint increasing the anticipation of the glorious experience to be enjoyed at the latter.
A trip to World’s End at Horton Plains Nuwara Eliya also affords the visitor with the opportunity to enjoy the other famed sites such as Lover’s Leap and Baker’s Falls in addition to the reserve’s flora and fauna. The region’s many attractions can be conveniently explored by lodging at an establishment acclaimed for its warm hospitality such as Jetwing Warwick Gardens set amidst the tranquil beauty of Ambewela.
