Providing a feast for the eyes, the journey by train or bus to Nuwara Eliya will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Sri Lanka. The best known and most travelled route from Colombo is via Kandy.

Nuwara Eliya is well connected by bus and train, but the bus journey is the quicker option if you want to save time getting there. The bus route from Colombo via Kandy takes about 6 hours, negotiating hairpin bends in the hills to reach the central bus station in the Nuwara Eliya town. Passing in and out of numerous mountain tunnels through tea estates and nearby villages, the journey by train offers some of the most incredible views of the hill country. The distance to the nearest railway station at Nanu Oya is about 9 km, and you can always hop a ride into town in one of the many taxis or three wheelers that operate from there.
