Barberyn Lighthouse
A Historic Southern Lighthouse on its own Island
Overlooking the southern waters, the Barberyn Lighthouse is a magnificent remnant of the 19th century and remains one of Sri Lanka’s more accessible towers. Found on Barberyn Island off the shores of nearby Beruwala, the lighthouse continues to illuminate the seas over a blanket of coconut trees and vacant stretches of sand from a height of 112 feet, and is also considered one of four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka.
Located on an island off the nearby coast of Beruwala, the Barberyn lighthouse is a 20-minute journey from the Dedduwa Boat House – first by road, and then by boat. Accompanied by a local fisherman, your boat will take you to the shores of Barberyn Island and wait for your return trip to the mainland. The quiet island also serves as an unlikely destination in itself, open to exploration should you wish to look around during your short visit.
