Locally-sourced souvenirs of the north
Filled with colourful souvenirs that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere on our island, the Jaffna Market is a fascinating world of northern Sri Lankan goods and produce. Beyond the endless selection of ornaments and clothes, an open-air portion of the Jaffna Market features fruits and vegetables alongside other edible specialties of the region. Produce of the palmyrah tree in particular, is readily available in the form of edible sticks, jaggery, flour, and more. The tree, known as odiyal in this region, is often praised as the ‘tree of life’ for its various health benefits, similar to the coconut tree found in other regions across Sri Lanka.
Best visited in the mornings, the Jaffna Market can be accessed via a 5-minute drive or tuk-tuk ride from North Gate by Jetwing. An alternative option is to return from your northern adventures at the adjacent bus terminus before 6 PM, and purchase any souvenirs while exploring the bustling market on your way back to your hotel room.
