Lunuganga Estate
An architectural masterpiece by the lake.
The iconic country home of famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, Lunuganga Estate is a testament to his timeless aesthetic of tropical living that is celebrated around the world. Sprawled over 15 acres, the rustic estate sits at the banks of the Dedduwa Lake as it has for centuries. Even though the name Lunuganga translates to ‘salt river’ in Sinhala, the estate is said to have been used as a cinnamon plantation during the Dutch period, followed by a rubber plantation during the British period, before being taken over by Bawa in 1949 to develop as his weekend bungalow. The enchanting cottage and equally alluring gardens of Lunuganga was often considered a beautifully crafted experimental ground for Bawa, whose prolific work can be seen amidst the many architectural charms across the estate.
Located just 5 minutes away from Yathra by Jetwing, the Lunuganga Estate is easily accessible and a must-visit destination during your time in Bentota. Open between 9 AM and 5 PM daily, the estate charges Rs. 1500 as an entrance fee with guided garden tours available at an additional charge. Even you choose to forego a tour, Lunuganga is a wonderfully idyllic location to enjoy a weekend meal.
