Sithulpawwa is an ancient buddhist monastery situated within the Yala National Park, in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. It dates back to the Anuradhapura Period (377 BC – 1017 AD). Built on a rocky hill, the site provides beautiful views of the countryside. Since it’s in close proximity to the National Park, you can pay it a visit while touring the region. Sithulpawwa provides visitors with an opportunity to gain insight into the history of the island and its cultural and religious features. Here are some of the best things to do in Sithulpawwa, Sri Lanka:
As you approach Sithulpawwa you will be greeted to the sight of the main stupa perched on top of a hill. It is one of the most picturesque Buddhist forest monasteries in Sri Lanka, said to have been built by King Kavantissa. Visitors will have to climb a flight of steep steps cut out of the rock to reach the stupa.
The monastery complex also has secondary ancient stupas, rock cut caves and remnants of monks’ quarters. Some of these date back to the early centuries of Buddhism, and display the architectural ingenuity of the time. Walking through the pathways to view these ancient ruins in Sri Lanka will allow you to appreciate the island’s past.
The main stupa which is still in use today is the main attraction for pilgrims. View the architecture and carvings, which will make you appreciate the craftsmanship that has lasted the test of time.
The temples in Sithulpawwa are adorned with vibrant frescoes and sculptures, many of which depict the life of the Buddha and other Jataka tales. You can also view the inscriptions carved into the rock, which provide details about the history of the monastery and monastic life of the monks.
There will be plenty of opportunities for amateur photographers to capture photographs of the breathtaking landscape and architecture. The lighting and shadow on the ancient ruins at different times of the day can produce marvellous photographs.
The scenery around Sithulpawwa rock temple makes it ideal for hiking and nature walks. A short stroll will take you to rocky outcrops that provide great views. The greenery set against the granite rock formations is a sight to behold for any nature lover.
You might also see local wildlife like monkeys, birds and lizards during your walk. Bring your binoculars along if you like birdwatching, as there are many bird species in this area.
It’s best to go during the early morning or evening hours, as you’ll be able to see the sunrise and sunset. The sky transforms into an amazing display of colours, which light up the ancient ruins of the monastery in the foreground.
A visit to Sithulpawwa also gives visitors the opportunity to experience local culture. The monastery is a pilgrimage site for many Buddhists and you will have a chance to see rituals and practices that have been passed down through generations. Talk to the local monks, who are always willing to share stories about the history of the site and its significance.
Visitors will have plenty of attractions in Southern Sri Lanka to explore near the monastery. Among these is the well-known Yala National Park. Go on a safari or a nature walk to catch a glimpse of leopards, elephants, and birds in their natural habitats. For added convenience, you can stay close to the park, with luxury lodgings like Jetwing Yala. If you prefer to stay in a more secluded environment bordering the wilderness, then Jetwing Jungle Lodge is a great option.
Another location to visit close by to Yala is the Bundala National Park. With its lovely wetlands and migratory birds, it’s another attraction you shouldn’t miss.
Sithulpawwa is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka, offering travellers a peaceful retreat where they can unwind and embrace nature. Whether you are looking to discover Sri Lanka’s culture or history, Sithulpawwa has something to offer everyone.
