Exploring 5 Unique Islands in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka may be famous for its golden beaches and ancient cities, but beyond the mainland lies a treasure trove of hidden islands. From coral-fringed islets in the northeast to mangrove-dotted river islands and remote northern gems, these off the beaten track islands promise unforgettable experiences. Here is a guide to exploring five unique islands in Sri Lanka.

Coral Island

Off the coast of Trincomalee in the northeast, Coral Island in Trincomalee is a small but beautiful marine sanctuary. Often overlooked by tourists, it is surrounded by shallow turquoise waters and coral reefs teeming with life. A short boat ride from Uppuveli or Nilaveli will bring you to this peaceful spot. Travellers can go snorkelling to discover the soft corals, clownfish, parrotfish and even the occasional turtle swimming by.

Coral Island is also close to Pigeon Island National Park, so many boat tours combine visits to both. It’s best to visit in the calmer seas between May and September. Perfect for nature lovers and underwater photographers, this tiny island is a dream come true.

The Madu River Islands

Located near Balapitiya on the southern coast, the Madu Ganga (Madu River) is a network of waterways with around 60 small islands. You can book a Madu river boat safari and pass through thick mangrove forests, ancient temples and cinnamon plantations.

Some islands are tiny – home to a few coconut trees – while others like Koth Duwa have historic Buddhist shrines. There’s even a quirky stop where you can get a natural fish spa as tiny fish nibble at your feet. The river is also a haven for birdlife and reptiles, making it a great place for exploration and photography.

The island also offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean and is generally free from crowds. It’s perfect for solo travellers, or if you want to go on coastal walks or watch the sunset.

Islands Off Galle

Off the coast of Galle are a collection of little-known islands. One of them is the remote Madol Duwa, which Martin Wickramasinghe wrote about in his famous novel about childhood adventures on an island. Today you can take a boat ride from Koggala Lake to visit Madol Duwa, explore the mangroves and relive a story that has been passed down through generations.

The tiny islets around Rumassala Hill near Unawatuna are great for snorkelling and diving. Folklore even says Rumassala was part of the Himalayas dropped by Hanuman, which adds a mythic dimension to your coastal adventures. While in Galle, visitors will have a choice of great hotels to unwind in, such as the iconic Jetwing Lighthouse and Jetwing Kurulubedda.

Islands Around Jaffna

The Jaffna Peninsula in the north is surrounded by some of the most beautiful islands around Sri Lanka, each with its own unique charm. Kayts, Karainagar, Delft (Neduntivu) and Nainativu are the most-visited. Delft Island stands out with its windy plains, wild ponies descended from Portuguese stock, coral walls and colonial ruins.

Nainativu is famous for its religious sites such as Nagapooshani Amman Kovil, an important Hindu temple and Nagadeepa Vihara, a Buddhist shrine said to have been visited by the Buddha himself. Ferries from Kurikadduwan jetty connect these islands to the mainland, making for a great day trip that reveals a different side of Sri Lanka, shaped by Tamil culture and history. Find luxury hotels such as Jetwing Jaffna situated close to these sites.

Nilwella Island

Hidden away near the peaceful fishing village of Nilwella, just outside Dickwella in Sri Lanka’s Deep South, is a small rocky island. Also called Blue Beach island, it is popular with locals who go fishing or have picnics here. Not as famous as nearby Hiriketiya Bay, the beach’s offbeat nature adds to its charm. During low tide you can wade or hire a local boat for a short trip, or go beach camping in Nilwella.

Whether it’s snorkelling in the coral gardens off Trincomalee or cruising along the Madu River, each island has its own story. So the next time you plan a trip to Sri Lanka, make sure these unique islands are on your list!
