Sri Lanka is a beautiful tropical island famous for its beaches, natural wonders, and rich history. Though it’s a popular destination for holidays all year round, there are many factors to consider when it comes to the best times to visit Sri Lanka. This depends on the places you’re planning to visit, and activities you want to experience. When it comes to the climate, it is sunny and warm throughout most of the year, aside from the monsoon season.
Let’s take a closer look at the best time to travel to Sri Lanka below.
Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, which means that it experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. When deciding on the best time to visit Sri Lanka, weather patterns play a major role. However, due to its location just above the equator, it tends to remain hot and humid all year round. Even during the rainy season, there’s plenty of sunshine, particularly along the coastal regions.
Sri Lanka has unpredictable weather patterns like any tropical island. The period between December and mid-April is considered the best time to go to Sri Lanka, as the weather is mostly favourable. The south-west monsoon from May to August affects the south and west coasts, while the north-east monsoon from November to January affects the east coast and cultural triangle. The inter-monsoon period with heavy rainfall occurs in October across the island. To determine the ideal time to visit, consider how different regions are affected by each season.
The weather on the south-west coast (home to the capital, Colombo), is influenced by the south-western monsoon, which brings heavy rains between May and September. The dry season lasts from December to March, and there is plenty of sunshine, making it the best season to visit Sri Lanka. Visitors to the south-west coast can relax in luxury hotels such as Jetwing Colombo Seven as they explore the region. During peak season, this area will be bustling with visitors, especially around the time of Duruthu Perahera Festival.
Some of Sri Lanka’s best beaches and coastal towns are located on the south coast, including Galle, Mirissa, and Unawatuna, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. This region experiences heavy rain during October, while the best weather for beach side activities occurs between late November and April, making it the best time of year to visit Sri Lanka. During the early months of the year, temperatures are moderate, and rainfall is less.
The eastern coastal areas such as Arugam Bay, and Nilaveli are heavily impacted by the north-eastern monsoon, so avoid visiting between October and December. However, unlike the rest of the country which experiences the south-west monsoon between May and September, these months are actually the best time to visit the east coast. There is abundant sunshine and the humidity levels are low. Rainfall is minimal, and the average temperatures hover around the mid-30s. Book a stay at Jetwing Surf to experience the best season in the East Coast.
Situated at an elevation of 6,500 feet above sea level, Sri Lanka’s tea country experiences cooler temperatures compared to other regions of the country. The hiking season, especially to Adam’s Peak, starts in December and lasts until May, coinciding with the driest period in this area. Kandy, located at a lower altitude, experiences hotter temperatures during these months, with average temperatures in the low-eighties. Unwind in the luxury Jetwing Kandy Gallery to experience this charming region.
The Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka boasts UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Anuradhapura and Sigiriya. This region has a dry climate for most of the year, with rainfall occurring between October and December. May and April are scorching, while February and March are cooler, making it a pleasant time to explore these historical sites while you relax in one of the best hotels in the region, Jetwing Lake.
The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on a variety of factors, with the climate generally being sunny and warm throughout most of the year, except during the monsoon season.
