Athagala, or Ethagala in Kurunegala is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Sri Lanka. It is a highly recognisable feature in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province, and has cultural, historical, and religious significance. For the traveller looking for something different besides Sri Lanka’s beaches and ancient capitals, Ethagala presents everything from folklore, to religion and beautiful scenery that makes it a must-visit in this part of the country.
The name Ethagala means “Elephant Rock,”. This refers to the shape of this rock formation, which resembles that of an elephant. When viewed from afar, this rock formation looks like a sleeping elephant, with distinct shapes that resemble an elephant’s head, body, and trunk. This formation has intrigued people over the years, making it one of the most fascinating places to visit in Kurunegala. It has found a place in the cultural heritage of Kurunegala. Geologically, Ethagala is a granite monadnock with a sharp top that rises from the surrounding landscape, a plain below Kurunegala town.
Ethagala has also been closely linked with the history of Kurunegala, dating back to the 13th century, when it was a royal capital of Sri Lanka. The rock formations surrounding the area were believed to be a natural safeguard for the kingdom. Over time, Ethagala became part of folklore and myths that claim the rock in the form of an elephant protected the city.
Ethagala is located about 1.5 km from the Kurunegala city centre. Visitors can get quite close to the top of the mountain in a vehicle due to a tarmac road being present. However, this is also a great place to go hiking in Sri Lanka. The time it takes to reach the summit in a vehicle is about 10 to 15 minutes, while it takes about 30 to 40 minutes on foot. Make sure to wear sturdy footwear, and be careful of monkeys that roam around the area. It is better to visit during the cooler hours of the day due to the hot granite surface that gets heated up in the sun.
On the top of the rock is a magnificent snow-white statue of the Samadhi Buddha, which stands at a height of about 20 m and was erected in 1973. The statue of the Buddha is positioned in the Samadhi posture of meditation. As a result, it has become a site of religious significance and pilgrimage for Buddhist devotees.
One of the notable features of Elephant rock in Kurunegala is its high visibility from miles away. The white Buddha statue contrasts sharply with the greenery surrounding the area and the clear blue sky. As the sun sets in the evening, the structure is illuminated, and a glowing light seems to shine over the town.
The perspective from the top of Ethagala provides a panoramic view of Kurunegala, the hills surrounding the town, and the Kurunegala Lake. The view from the top provides an opportunity to admire the well-structured layout of the town. One of the best times to go is during sunset, when the sky is lit up in beautiful hues.
There are several interesting sites to visit and things to do in Kurunegala around Ethagala. Ibbagala Raja Maha Vihara is a mid-hill cave temple, famous for its peaceful atmosphere, while Ethkanda Rajamaha Vihara is an important religious site in the area. Gale Bandara Shrine is a popular local shrine dedicated to a guardian deity.
The Christ the King Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful colonial-era church in Kurunegala. You can relax at Kurunegala Lake, also known as Ranthaliya Wewa, in a pleasant setting surrounded by nature.
Visitors can also combine a trip to the site while travelling to major cities like Kandy, about an hour away. While in the area, unwind in top hotels such as Jetwing Kandy Gallery.
The best time to explore Ethagala is in the early morning hours or late afternoon. Remember to dress appropriately when visiting religious locations and be careful of monkeys, so keep your personal effects safe. Since there is a concrete access road, Ethagala is quite safe to visit for families and even senior citizens.
Ethagala offers a highly rewarding experience for tourists visiting Kurunegala. Whether you’re looking for tranquillity or natural beauty, Ethagala provides a glimpse into the very heart of Sri Lanka’s North Western Province.
