Jetwing Hotels has been a pioneer of sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka, guided for over five decades by the philosophy of our founder, the late Herbert Cooray. With the importance of sustainability being brought to the fore in recent times, the need for conscious decisions to be made for the future of the planet and its people is greater than ever. We believe that making changes today, however small, can lead to a better future.
By sharing our journey of sustainability, what we have learnt, and what we hope to achieve, we aim to inspire change and create a butterfly effect.
Solar energy plays an essential role in our daily operations at Jetwing Kandy Gallery. A 90.5-kilowatt net-metered, roof mounted solar photovoltaic system supplies more than 40% of our daily electricity requirement. In addition, a solar thermal system consisting of 30 flat-plate collector panels supplies the hot water requirement of the property, during sunlit hours.
Jetwing Kandy Gallery features an on-site effluent treatment plant, where 100% of wastewater generated through hotel operations is carefully treated with aerobic and anaerobic biological processes, before being used for irrigating our verdant gardens.
All organic waste at Jetwing Kandy Gallery is treated and recycled onsite. Food waste generated from hotel operations is fed into our onsite biogas digester, which later supplies biogas for cooking. An above-ground composter is used to treat all garden sweepings and clippings found across the grounds, with the product-compost used as a nutrient-rich soil enhancer in our gardens.
Located in the historic city of Kandy, famed world over for the annual Esala Perahera, Jetwing Kandy Gallery wire-art sculptures that tell the tale of the grand procession.
The lobby area and rooms feature exquisite laksha crafts, a unique art form that has been practiced in Sri Lanka for centuries, with a special connection to the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy. Laksha, also known as lac or lacquer work, dates back to the time of the introduction of Buddhism to the island. Featuring these intricate artworks not only preserves our rich cultural heritage but also supports local artisans.
Youth from nearby communities are recruited through the Jetwing Youth Development Programme (JYDP), which offers free training in tourism, hospitality, language, and interpersonal skills. This equips them for careers within the industry. After the training, participants receive on-the-job training and are then given the opportunity to join our family, though there is no obligation to do so.

Employee health and safety is of the utmost importance to us. We routinely inspect our spaces, maintain essential safety equipment, and provide thorough training so that all associates are well-prepared in case of an emergency.
Despite having limited space available, Jetwing Kandy Gallery hosts an organic garden which is maximized by growing local herbs and vegetables whenever possible. Irrigated from a treated water line, the fresh produce is then shared with our hotel kitchen where our chefs use it to prepare delicious meals for your indulgence.
Minimising both plastic waste and the carbon footprint from transportation, Jetwing Kandy Gallery uses glass water bottles that are filled at the glass water bottling plant in operation at Jetwing Lake.
At Jetwing Hotels, we take pride in celebrating our local cuisine. We were the first family of hotels in Sri Lanka to exclusively use local fruits, vegetables, and seafood in our culinary offerings. By focusing on local sourcing, we've built strong partnerships throughout our supply chain, with many of our suppliers located within the same district.
