Sustainable Hospitality By The Sea
Resting at the heart of our sustainable strip of hotels in Negombo, Jetwing Sea joins the rest of our family in its unrelenting dedication as responsible citizens. With a number of initiatives designed to simultaneously harness and preserve the strength of our surrounding communities and environments, our seaside home of Sri Lankan hospitality is truly a role model in the field of sustainable tourism.
Energy and Carbon
Jetwing Sea features an onsite biomass boiler that runs on sustainably harvested cinnamon wood. The boiler meets the hot water requirement of our property during the nights, while 50 flat plate collector-type solar panels produce hot water during the sunlit hours, from 9 AM to 4 PM every day.
Our staff cafeteria also uses both biogas and biomass stoves – the latter of which is also operated using cinnamon wood.
The 15 kW off-grid roof mounted solar array installed at Jetwing Sea in 2011 also marked the establishment of the second solar photovoltaic system in our family of hotels, following its initial success at Jetwing Blue in 2010. The electricity generated is primarily used towards illumination in our luxurious rooms, where an indicator is available to show you when solar or grid electricity is being used.
Water and Waste
Harnessing the strategic potential of our luxurious rooftop spa, Jetwing Sea features a resourceful rainwater harvesting system where water collected from the top of our property is filtered, and later used to supplement the freshwater requirement for our swimming pools.
As with most hotels in our family across the island, Jetwing Sea also hosts an effluent treatment plant where 100% of wastewater generated from the property is treated onsite. Using only aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment methods, the end product is used for irrigation throughout our coastal gardens.
Finally, food waste from our kitchens and restaurants are added to a biogas digester on a daily basis, which then produces a CH4-rich output gas that helps fuel modified stoves in our staff kitchen. The digester at Jetwing Sea also features a heating jacket with a dedicated solar array, which helps speed up the digestion process.
Community and Culture
Joining the collective sustainable commitment of our family, Jetwing Sea joins our neighbouring hotels in Negombo in collaboratively maintaining a ward that serves a number of patients from local communities that visit the Negombo Teaching Hospital.
Sourcing and Production
Jetwing Sea maintains a thriving organic garden amidst the limited coastal greenery found on the property, maximising its use by growing a variety of local fruits and herbs when possible, and later using them in meals prepared by our hotel kitchens. Furthermore, all glass water bottles used throughout the property are sourced from our very own bottling plant located at Jetwing Blue nearby.
At Jetwing Hotels, we’re committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and fostering positive social impacts. We welcome your feedback on our sustainability efforts, including suggestions for how we improve. Please share your thoughts and ideas with us at sustainability@jetwinghotels.com
