Is it safe to travel to and about Sri Lanka right now?

Yes, Sri Lanka remains open, welcoming and widely travelled by visitors from around the world. As with many destinations, travellers are advised to stay informed, follow official travel guidance, avoid demonstrations or large public gatherings, and use sensible precautions when moving around.

For solo travellers, the island is generally easy to navigate alone. Locals are welcoming, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and there's a strong path of independent travellers already here, so you're rarely without good advice nearby. For families, Sri Lanka is equally comfortable. Culture, wildlife, and beaches sit close together, so you can mix a safari morning with a calm afternoon by the pool, without long transfers eating into the day.

As always, our team is happy to help arrange trusted drivers and share local guidance, whoever you're travelling with.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Honestly, there isn't a single "best" month, and that's one of the greatest things about this island. Sri Lanka sits between two monsoon systems, so while one coast is having its rainy spell, the other is enjoying clear skies and calm seas. This means that whenever you choose to travel, there's always somewhere in season.

Broadly, the southwest coast, the hill country, and the Cultural Triangle are at their driest from December to March. This is when Galle, Bentota, and the beaches around Colombo see the most sunshine. The east coast, around Arugam Bay, flips the other way, coming into its own from May to September.

That said, "off-season" here mostly just means spells of showers and the sea not being quite as calm for swimming. And on those days, there's still plenty to fill your time with cultural sites and nature trails, some of the island's best food, all just as good in the rain as in the sun.
Vacationing in Sri Lanka at the moment may be the greatest helping hand you can give to putting the country back on track.

Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

From 25th May 2026, nationals of 40 selected countries are eligible for a free tourist Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for stays of up to 30 days, with double entry permitted within that period. This includes travellers from countries such as the UK, USA, India, China, Australia and several European and Gulf countries. Travellers from countries outside the free ETA list may still apply through the same ETA system, though a standard fee may apply.

A few practical notes: your passport needs at least six months' validity from your arrival date, and it's worth applying a few days before you travel and only through the official portal, eta.gov.lk, since a few unofficial sites charge extra for the same thing. If you're staying longer than 30 days, extensions are possible once you're here.

As visa and entry requirements can change from time to time, it's always worth checking the official website closer to your travel date.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate and the temperatures are fairly constant year around, with an average of 25-30 °C in the coastal regions and 15-18 °C in the central highlands. The island’s weather is mostly influenced by the two monsoon seasons, which bring rains to the south-west coasts from May to September and north-east coasts from October to February. Although the island has favourable weather conditions all year-round, it is important to keep in mind that the weather and climatic conditions cannot be predicted with 100% certainty.
