The Yapahuwa Kingdom (13th Century) was the brief capital and formidable rock fortress of Sri Lanka under King Buvanekabahu I. Built for defense against South Indian invasions, it is famed for its magnificent ornate stone staircase, guarded by lion sculptures, which leads to the ruins of the royal palace and the former Temple of the Tooth Relic.
