Sustainability
A Shared Commitment To Sustainability
As a shared operation with our family at Jetwing Lighthouse, our exclusive coastal hideaway at Jetwing Lighthouse Club is committed to the same initiatives that promote the harmonious coexistence of community and environment. Joining our family of responsible hotels across Sri Lanka, Jetwing Lighthouse Club focuses on all aspects of our celebrated sustainability programme throughout a number of operations on our property.
Energy and Carbon
The entire hot water requirement of Jetwing Lighthouse Club is met through renewable energy, via the use of 22 solar thermal panels and a back-up heat pump. A 125 kW grid-tied roof mounted solar photovoltaic array was also commissioned in 2017, and now contributes towards 10% of the total electricity requirement across hotel operations.
Water and Waste
An onsite effluent treatment plant treats all wastewater that is generated from our hotel operations. The treated water is later used for garden irrigation, while the sludge is used as a nutrient-rich soil enhancer. In addition, all garden sweepings and other tree clippings from our coastal lawn are placed in a traditional above ground compost pile, where the product compost is used as a nutrient-rich soil enhancer in the hotel gardens.
Biodiversity
The seas beyond Jetwing Lighthouse Club are home to one of the largest resident blue whale populations in the world, making our location in the southern province ideal for both the observation and awareness of these marine mammals. A cetacean information center has since been established at our adjoining sister hotel, where local schoolchildren and the wider community can join our guests in understanding these magnificent species. Our resident naturalist also hosts responsible whale watching tours, while the hotel has also conducted several awareness programmes with local boat and tour operators in the area.
Community and Culture
Following the devastating tsunami in 2004, several parties including Jetwing Lighthouse joined hands to build a community pool, which aimed to teach future generations valuable swimming skills under the supervision of professional coaches. In addition, the local tuk-tuk drivers in our immediate neighbourhood have been welcomed into our family at Jetwing Lighthouse and Jetwing Lighthouse Club through a special partnership that eliminates the need for a third party taxi service. These friendly drivers now provide our guests with transport and tours in and around the city of Galle.
Our resident naturalist also hosts a number of lectures and workshops on the environment, focusing on topics such as preserving our biodiversity, waste management and more, which raise awareness among our neighbouring communities.
Sourcing and Production
Our onsite glass bottling plant fills all glass water bottles used at Jetwing Lighthouse Club with purified water. With semi-automated washing, and fully automated filling and capping systems, the plant can achieve a maximum bottling capacity of 2000 litres per day from a repurposed container that is powered by a dedicated solar array. In addition, our associates also maintain an organic garden, which grows fresh regional produce that is later used in our hotel kitchens.
