Brief Gardens

The lavishly landscaped masterpiece of Bevis Bawa

Home to the late master landscaper, Bevis Bawa, Brief Gardens was his growing masterpiece until his demise in 1992. As a lush jungle abode dating back to the first half of the 20th century, Brief Gardens was no stranger to international celebrities such as Agatha Christie, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. The verdant setting continues to be well maintained to this day, with its interesting sculptures, stately bungalow, and array of colourful flora, as it continues to serve as an attractive escape from the coastal buzz into the fascinating history of Bevis Bawa and his welcoming regal gardens.

Brief Gardens are situated 30 minutes away from Dedduwa Boat House by car. As you cross the provincial border at the iconic Bentota Bridge, your journey will take you inland from the town of Aluthgama, on a scenic drive through the lush paddy fields of southern Sri Lanka that surround the hidden gem of Bevis Bawa.
