Lush landscapes in our provincial countryside
Once the stately home of master Sri Lankan landscaper Bevis Bawa, the Brief Gardens has also played host to a long line of internationally renowned names such as Agatha Christie, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Designed as a lush residential jungle in the first half of the 20th century, Bevis Bawa is said to have worked on his verdant masterpiece right up till his demise in 1992. Adorned with exotic flora, fascinating sculptures and a regal bungalow that holds a treasure trove of stories, the Brief Gardens are not only a fascinating insight into the eccentric life of Bevis Bawa, but also a wonderful destination to lose yourself in the serenity of its landscapes.
By road, Brief Gardens is located 30 minutes away from Yathra by Jetwing. The journey crosses the provincial border at the distinguishable Bentota Bridge before heading inland at the town of Aluthgama, through the narrow roads and paddy fields that are home to the southern coastal village community – all of whom are well-versed in directions to the iconic gardens.
