Surf Season in Arugam Bay: When to Visit for the Best Waves

Arugam Bay is a scenic beach located on Sri Lanka’s east coast. It is most famous for being a surfers’ paradise. Popular for its consistent waves, warm waters and laid-back atmosphere, the beach town attracts surfers from around the world. From beginners who are only learning to paddle to experienced surfers in search of barrels, Arugam Bay has something to offer every surfer. Here is a guide to the Arugam bay surf season and the best places to surf:

The best time for surfing in Arugam Bay is between April and October. The east coast of Sri Lanka experiences the southwest monsoon during this time, which brings offshore winds, along with clean and strong swells. The peak time of the season is between June and August, when the waves are at their best. This also attracts many professional-level surfers to the country, along with events like the World Surf League’s Qualifying Series.

According to the Arugam Bay surf forecast, waves during the surf season typically range from 2 to 6 feet, with larger swells during the peak months and the weather is around 25-32°C (77-90°F) year-round. Visitors will be pleased to know that wetsuits are unnecessary thanks to warm ocean water. The best time for surfing is usually in the mornings as the winds are light, and the conditions are clear.

There are plenty of surf shops in Arugam Bay where you can rent boards or book lessons with experienced instructors. The beach gets busy in the high season (June-August), so if you prefer less crowded waves, the best time to visit Arugam Bay is from April-May or September-October.

You can find ample accommodation options for every budget, from elegant beachfront villas like Kottukal Beach House to eco-luxury resorts in Pottuvil such as Jetwing Surf. Reserve ahead in the high season.

Arugam Bay has multiple surf breaks at different levels of difficulty. Here are the top surf spots in Arugam Bay:

Main Point: Main Point in Arugam Bay is the most celebrated surf break. It has powerful right-hand waves with a maximum size of 6 feet or more on a good day. It’s best suited for experienced and advanced-level surfers. The reef-bottomed break yields hollow, quick waves, perfect for professional surfers. It is located right in front of the main town and is easily accessible.

Baby Point: For newbies who are just starting out, Baby Point is where to go. Situated just next to Main Point, Baby has smaller, softer right-hand break waves that are ideal to learn on. There are a couple of surf schools operating from here, where you can have lessons and even rent boards.

Whiskey Point: Situated 20 minutes from Arugam Bay, Whiskey Point offers fun, mellow waves. The sandy bottom break makes this a safe bet for beginners, while more experienced and intermediate surfers can enjoy the long, peeling rides. The stunning sunrise makes early morning surfs here very special.

Peanut Farm: Peanut Farm is one of the most scenic surf spots in the area, located about 30 minutes south of Arugam Bay. It features two sections: a smaller, gentler wave for beginners and a more powerful, faster wave for intermediate surfers. Nestled among lush greenery, this spot offers a peaceful, secluded environment. The waves are right-hand point breaks, and the best time to surf is from mid-morning to the afternoon.

Elephant Rock: This is a beautiful and less crowded surf break, which features soft right-hand break waves and incredible scenery. The break is best for beginners and intermediate surfers
who want to experience a more relaxed session. It’s also a great spot to take in the sunset after a long day in the water. However, there are occasional wildlife sightings, including of elephants!
